Big props to 'Davy Jones' for correctly guessing the steaming engine in the last post was a steam winch, specifically the one mounted here. I dealt with this gracious lady for my first few voyages. Note the mooring lines laid out, implying either fair weather and a short voyage, or, more likely, the prospect of a docking the next 24 hours or so...

I love the jewel-blue color of open water in the Gulf of Mexico. I miss it, too.

All of the AHL tankers are being layed up. End of an era which is a Big Error.

I agree. So many jobs lost, and when MARAD is giving out loans so small boatyards with 20 employees can have robotic paint sprayers, it seems like a big fuck you to the industry that they won't renegotiate the terms of the loans so that 400 mariners and shore staff can have a job. If the MARAD staff weren't deep-throating OSG (which isn't even an American company) and didn't have Crowley at the other end, (which flags out their ships to foreign countries)balls deep, maybe an actual 100% American independent company would have survived. This is MARAD showing the true colors under this administration. Sean C, the former MARAD administrator, would never have allowed this to happen on his watch.

Another way of looking at this is like Walmart shutting down a smaller Mom and Pop store.
